Daylight Saving Time: when do we switch to summertime?

In 2023, we change the time from the night of Saturday, March 26 to Sunday, March 27, 2022. Indeed, since 1975, in France, the time change takes place on the last Sunday of March (summertime) and the last Sunday in October (winter time).

When do we change clocks in 2023?

In concrete terms daylight saving time, the time is changed twice a year, for the transition to summertime which takes place each year on the last weekend of March, and the transition to winter time which takes place in October.

What date do we switch to summer time?

In 2022, the time change will take place on the night of Saturday March 26 to Sunday March 27. To switch to summer time, we advance our clock one hour. So, at 2 a.m., it will actually be 3 a.m.  We therefore “lose” an hour of sleep compared to a usual night… But the time change always takes place on weekends, to allow everyone not to be too offbeat at the very beginning of the week. The following year, the transition to summer time will take place on the night of Saturday March 25 to Sunday March 26, 2023.

When do we switch to winter time in 2023?

The 2022 winter time change takes place on the night of Saturday October 29 to Sunday October 30, 2022. This time, we “gain” an hour of sleep since this time we set our clock back one hour. Thus, at 3am, it will be 2am. Remember that the time change in winter always takes place on the last Sunday of October.

Why do we change the clock every year?

We advance our watches in March because we assume that by gaining an extra hour of sunshine in the evening (with the lengthening of the days from spring ) we consume less electricity for lighting. When the days get shorter , starting in the fall , we will put our clocks back one hour again.

Why do we say it’s noon in the sun when my watch says two o’clock?

To find out what time it is somewhere on the globe, the earth has been divided into 24 vertical bands called “time zones”. The idea being that for everyone, it is night at midnight and day at noon. Problem, each country does as it pleases. Take the case of France. It is in the first universal time zone (that of Greenwich)… However, it does not apply it. Our clocks are ahead of this time zone by one hour in winter and two hours in summer. So in summer, when it is noon in the sun, our clocks indicate 2 p.m., and in winter 1 p.m

An expected deadline because the time change remains unpopular . When the European Parliament polled EU citizens, 80% of the 4.6 million people who responded to the online questionnaire said they would stop it.

A plebiscite, recorded by the President of the European Commission at the time: “Millions of people responded and are of the opinion that in future, summer time should always be rule, and we will do it quickly”, assured Jean-Claude Juncker.

In France,  59% of voters in a citizen consultation said they were in favor of choosing summer time as the permanent seasonal time .

But winter time or summer time?

Within the European Council, which brings together the Heads of State and Government of the Member States, i.e. the real decision-makers at EU level, the “summer time for all” option is not unanimous .

And if it turns out that the decision is not uniform (between countries keeping summer time and others favoring winter time), the operation of certain sectors of activity within the market unique could be considerably disrupted, particularly in transport.

Hence the deadlock within the European Council, which has still not managed to overcome it and resolve this issue.
