Diabetic Retinopathy

An adverse effect of diabetes called diabetic retinopathy is brought on by high blood sugar levels harming the retina. If undetected and mistreated, it can result in blindness.

What causes retinopathy?

Persistently high blood glucose levels can damage and destroy the retina’s small blood vessels.

Exudates, hemorrhages, and even retinal edema could result from this.

As a result, the retina could experience oxygen deprivation and grow abnormal blood vessels. Low blood glucose levels reduce the chance of developing retinopathy.

Over time, diabetic retinopathy progresses in stages.

Stage 1: background retinopathy

This indicates that the blood vessels in the retina at the back of your eyes (retina) have developed minute bulges (microaneurysms), which may leak a tiny amount of blood. Those who have diabetes frequently experience this.

Stage 2: pre-proliferative retinopathy

This indicates that the retina is experiencing more drastic and broad alterations, including bleeding into the retina.

Stage 3: proliferative retinopathy

This indicates that your retina has grown new blood vessels and scar tissue, which can cause serious bleeding and result in retinal detachment, in which the retina rips away from the back of the eye.

What is the DRSS score?

The retina may then experience oxygen deprivation and grow abnormal blood vessels as a result. DRSS scores are linked to a higher risk of proliferative DR, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (PDR).
