What is desktop virtualization?

Desktop virtualization is a technology that allows an individual to separate his PC programs from their desktop. Virtualized desktops typically reside via a central remote server instead of the computer’s hard drive on personal machines. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)

In the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), the operating system runs on a virtual computer (VM) located on a server within the data center. The desktop image moves across networks to reach the user’s device. The user can communicate with their desktop (and the applications that run it along with the OS) as if it were local.

VDI provides each user their VM with an operating system unique to each. The operating system’s resources, such as drivers, memory, CPUs, etc.–operate through a software layer called a hypervisor. It emulates their output, handles the allocation of resources across multiple VMs, and permits them to run in tandem with the same host.

One of the significant benefits of VDI is that it can provide end-users with Windows 10 desktop and operating systems. However, since VDI can only support one user for each Windows 10 instance, it requires the creation of a separate VM per Windows 10 user.

Remote desktop services (RDS)

Remote desktop services (RDS)–also called Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH)–users can remotely connect to desktops and Windows applications via Microsoft Windows Server. Microsoft Windows Server operating system. Desktop images and applications are accessible through Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).

From the point of view of the user, RDS and VDI are the same. However, since the one version that runs Windows Server can support as many simultaneous users as the server’s hardware can handle, RDS can be a more affordable desktop virtualization choice.

Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS)

With desktop-as-a Service (DaaS), VMs host in a cloud-based backend provided by a third-party vendor. DaaS can be easily scaled, is more flexible than traditional on-premise solutions, and typically deploys quicker than other options for desktop virtualization.

Like other cloud desktop virtualization, DaaS shares many benefits of cloud computing, such as the ability to handle fluctuating workloads and shifting storage requirements, usage-based pricing, and the capability of making applications and data accessible from almost any internet-connected device. The main drawback of DaaS is that the features and configurations aren’t always as customizable as required.
