How to Draw a Red Panda

Did you know that the red panda is not a panda bear?

It was once thought to be a relative of the panda because it lives in the same area and eats a similar diet, consisting mainly of bamboo.

Other researchers thought it was a cousin of the raccoon due to its mask and ringed tail. At one period, it was called “bear-cat,” while it is not a cat either. Now, however, scientists classify the red panda in a family of its own, as it is unlike any other animal.

Red pandas are gentle animals that are easy to tame, sadly leading them into the illegal pet trade. Many of these animals find homes in zoos, where their climbing antics make them favorites with visitors.

Would you like to draw a red panda?

Now you can, with the help of this easy step-by-step drawing tutorial. You will require a pencil, a report sheet, and an eraser. You may also want to have colored pencils, crayons, or something similar in shades of red and brown on hand to color your finished drawing.

Step-by-step instructions for drawing a red panda.

Step 1

Start by drawing a circle or oval. This forms the panda’s head.

Step 2

Then draw a curved line below the head. Fold the line back on itself, enclosing a rounded shape, outlining the body.

Step 3

On one side of the head, draw a short, curved line. Next, draw several curved lines, meeting them at points, forming a zigzag pattern. Then use a long curved line to connect the zigzag to the chin. Reprise this process on the other side to create a mirror image.

Step 4

From the middle of the body, develop a curved line. Allow the line to cross outside the body, then fold it back on itself. This creates one of the panda’s front legs. Circle another similar shape using a curved line to form the other leg.

step 5

Erase the guidelines for the face and leg.

Step 6

Draw a curved line across the body, almost enclosing a circle. Then, relate the open edge of the circle to the face of the body using a short, curved line. This forms the hind leg of the panda. Extend a long, curved line from the hip that wraps around the front of the body. Fold the line back on itself, crossing two of the feet. This forms the long, thick tail.

step 7

Circle small oval shapes at the tip of each paw, indicating the claws. Wrap the tail with sets of similar curved lines, indicating stripes.

step 8

For each ear, enclose a triangle and a smaller triangle inside it. Draw two hoops in the middle of the face to form the significant sights. Draw a small circle inside each eye and shadow around it. Above each look, draw a sideways “U” figure. Then enclose the end of each “U” using a series of short, curved lines that satisfy at jagged points. These form the panda’s eyebrows.

step 9

Add the final details to your red panda. Draw an upside-down spherical triangle shape to form the nose. Place a small oval inside and shade around it. Below the beak, draw two curved lines like a rounded “W” to form the backchat. Enclose the mouth and the area between the eyes using short, curved lines that meet at jagged ends. Use similar lines to enclose a curved build on each cheek. Finally, using short lines, add the skin texture on the top of the head, chest, and front leg.
